The Newington & Borough Society is primarily a local history group, covering the historic areas of Newington and Borough in Southwark, London.
The area has been inhabited for two millennia, with a rare Roman sarcophagus recently discovered. Our local heroes include:
- Literary history, with Chaucer and Dickens connections;
- Political history, with the St George’s Fields riot, Chartists, and more recently Peter Tatchell
- Scientific history, with Faraday and Babbage
Our group aims to preserve that history, working particularly on saving historic buildings (threatened by various regeneration projects).
We also host local walks and talks in the area.
